Snowfall disrupts transport amid China's travel rush
Heavy snowfall has enveloped some areas of central and eastern China since Wednesday, leading to transport disruption amid the ongoing Spring Festival travel rush. The National Meteorological Center on Sunday renewed an orange alert for snowstorms in some parts of China, predicting heavy snow in provinces including Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong. China Railway Wuhan Bureau Group Co., Ltd. said on Sunday that it plans to suspend the operation of 141 round trips due to the widespread snowfall and freezing weather.
China's daily border entries/exits to reach pre-pandemic numbers during Spring Festival
The average number of daily border entries and exits during the approaching Spring Festival holiday is expected to reach 1.8 million, returning to the level in 2019. The number is expected to be 3.3 times higher than last year. The daily average border crossings are predicted to be 83,000 at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, 39,000 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and 36,000 at Beijing Capital International Airport.
China reports 81.55 million railway trips in first week of travel rush
China's railway network handled 81.55 million trips between Jan. 26 and Feb. 1, the first week of the Spring Festival travel rush, industry data showed. This translated to an average of about 11.65 million railway trips every day during the past week, said China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway). China Railway estimated that a total of 480 million railway trips are expected to be made during this year's Spring Festival travel rush, surging 37.9 percent compared with the 2023 level.
Chongqing launches first international passenger air route to Milan, Italy
Chongqing's inaugural direct passenger flight to Milan, Italy, will take off on March 19, becoming the second international regular passenger flight route launched this year from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. Hainan Airlines' new Chongqing-Milan route, operated with a Boeing 787 aircraft, will run twice weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays). Departing from Chongqing at 02:00 AM, it arrives at Milan Malpensa Airport at 06:45 AM, with an 11-hour and 45-minute flight duration.
Thailand expects surge in Chinese tourists
The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects a significant rise in Chinese tourist arrivals on Koh Samui this month, thanks to the visa-waiver scheme and the upcoming Lunar New Year. A direct flight carrying 138 holidaymakers from China arrived at Samui airport on Feb 1. At least 5,000 Chinese tourists are projected to visit the island in February. Some 4,000 Chinese tourists visited the island in January.
